  • Non-Surgical Care

    Non-Surgical Care

Non-surgical care forms the basis of our practice and we spend considerable amounts of time pursuing non-surgical treatment modalities before recommending surgery. In keeping with our philosophy of a multi-disciplinary approach to spinal care we offer the following non-surgical services.

    Patient Education and Support

A patient who is well informed and has a thorough awareness of his problem is able to participate in a shared decision making process regarding the treatment. We make an attempt to inform and educate our patients about their symptoms, their problem and the treatment options at every stage of your interaction with our team – surgeons, physiotherapists, counsellors and nurses.

    Spinal Rehabilitation

Spinal Rehabilitation forms the basis of the management of a large proportion of spinal disorders and is carried out by highly trained physiotherapists. Our rehabilitation interventions are evidence-based and in keeping with the accepted best-practices all over the world. We adopt an exercise based treatment approach combined with advice regarding posture and back care and usually avoid local treatments like Interferential therapy, short-wave diathermy and ultrasound massage for chronic pain management. Our physiotherapists have considerable expertise in the management of acute and chronic spinal problems and may supplement the exercise base treatment with other treatment modalities.

    Pain Counselling

Chronic (long standing) spinal pain can occasionally take a toll on one’s occupation, social and recreational activities leading to irritability, anxiety and depression. The pain can occasionally take control of peoples lives and they find all their day-to-day activities been affected by their symptoms. The resultant anxiety and depression can lead to the heightened pain perception and can prolong the duration of symptoms. Pain counselling helps to form coping strategies to break the vicious cycle of pain and anxiety and reduces the severity of perceived pain and the duration of symptoms. The aim is to restore spinal pain sufferers to a wholesome and productive life.

The decision whether to go ahead with surgery or try non-operative treatment is taken in consultation with the patient and his family. Prior to surgery, the patients and their families have provided detailed information regarding the surgery, the expected outcomes and potential risks. We allow enough time for a two-way discussion so that the patients and their families are fully aware of all aspects of the surgery and the post-operative stay in the hospital. The proposed date of surgery will be decided in consultation with the patient and his family.

In order to provide individual attention to the patient after surgery, the patient may be advised to stay in the high-dependency unit overnight. A majority of the patients is encouraged to get out of bed and walk around on the first day after surgery (using a brace or corset), with the assistance of a physiotherapist. The surgical wound is closely monitored and when the surgical team is happy with the wound healing and when the patient is comfortable, he/she will be discharged from the hospital. A visit to the hospital is usually scheduled for the 8-10th day after surgery.

  • Minimally Invasive Approach

    Minimally Invasive Approach

    • A few tiny scars instead of one large scar
    • Shorter hospital stay – a few days instead of a week
    • Reduced postoperative pain
    • Shorter recovery time – a few months instead of a year – and quicker return to daily activities, including work

Dr. Isaac Spine centre has offered minimally invasive approach to surgery for many patients in south Tamilnadu and Kerala people. Minimally invasive surgery means significantly less pain, fewer side effects, less scarring, a shorter recovery period, and a faster return to normal activities than traditional surgery. It seeks to diminish the problems of traditional extensile exposures aiming for more rapid rehabilitation of patients after surgery. This is a specialization that requires a high degree of planning, customized components and surgical skills.

At Dr. Isaac Spine centre, the therapy for the treatment of spinal disorders has been advanced using minimally invasive endoscopic surgical techniques in which surgery is performed with special instruments inserted through small incisions. Endoscopic spinal surgery represents a major advance in the treatment of spinal disorders. It shares the advantages of other endoscopic surgical techniques (i.e., laparoscopy and thoracoscopy). It can be used instead of open surgical techniques for procedures such as spinal decompression and fusion.

In minimally invasive procedures, the surgical incisions are small, there is no need (or minimal need) for muscle stripping, there is less tissue retraction, and blood loss is minimized. Special surgical tools allow the surgeon to achieve the same goals and objectives as the open surgery while minimizing cutting and retracting of the paraspinous muscles. Therefore, tissue trauma (injury) and post-operative pain are reduced, hospital stays are shorter, and patients can recover more quickly.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery: The Benefits

Only 10 years ago, if you had spine surgery, you could expect it to take as much as one year before you would be able to return to normal activities. Minimally invasive techniques, however, are changing the face of spine surgery. What used to result in a weeklong hospital stay, a year’s recovery period and a large scar has been diminished to a few days, a few months and a few small scars.

How is Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery Performed?

Conventional spine surgery requires a long incision and a lengthy recovery period. Minimally invasive surgery, also known as “keyhole” surgery, uses a thin, telescope-like instrument known as an endoscope, which is inserted through small incisions. The endoscope is connected to a tiny video camera – smaller than a dime – which projects an “inside” view of the patient’s body onto television screens in the operating room.

Small surgical instruments may then be passed through one or more additional half-inch incisions. Following the procedure, the small incisions are closed with sutures and covered with surgical tape. After a few months, they are barely visible.

What are the Benefits of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery ?

Typically, minimally invasive spinal surgery allows for the same outcomes as conventional spine surgery. The Benefits of minimally invasive back surgery include:
