Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: The Growing Threat

Adolescence, a stage when the human body gets a complete transformation, it is the time when a child enters the next stage of his or her life with all smiles but, there are some causes of concern also. Idiopathic Scoliosis, an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine without a known cause is one among them. The condition can be diagnosed and cured with proper medical care but, more than that, a child who is affected by the disease needs proper affection and emotional support from the parents so that, it doesn’t affect the self-esteem and emotional health of the child, they should have all ears to the concerns of the child.

Challenges and Difficulties

Idiopathic Scoliosis makes life difficult for an adolescent child. The following are some of the main challenges that a child affected by the disease has to go through:

  •         Sideways curvature of the spine or rib hump that is easily noticeable while wearing tight dresses such as swimsuits
  •         The clothes may not fit properly, one sleeve may be appearing too long and, the other one short.
  •         Children may not be comfortable wearing back braces, it limits them from doing activities such as, swimming and exercise and, the back braces could also lead to questions and teasing.

Scoliosis and self-esteem

Scoliosis curves are measured by the Cobb angle and, it is the angle between the most- titled vertebra above the curve’s apex and, most-titled vertebra below the apex. The angles and curve sizes of Scoliosis is not a fixed one, it can vary-ranging from 10 degrees and, some curves can only be seen while wearing tight clothes. Scoliosis can also lead to lowering of self-esteem and depression among teens and young adults. An adolescent, who is having a small curve may be bothered more about the disease because of the bullies and teasing by others and, people having comparatively large curves will be less bothered about it.

A Shoulder to lean on

An adolescent having scoliosis can be feeling a loss of self control, the disease cannot be totally cured and, a brace only prevents the curve from getting worse or a major surgery from an expert surgeon makes the fuse part of the spine straight and, the child has to wear the braces as per the rules recommended by the doctor. The friends and family of the child having Scoliosis can play a great part to improve the mental state of the child, they should be providing the much needed support and assistance to the child and, make them aware that this is not the end of the world for them.
